Strapon Harness
Strapon Dildo

What is a Strapon?

It’s a type of sex toy that includes a harness type of system that is worn around the waist and / or hips and you can get a special dildo that fits into it. Strapons give women the option of introducing artificial penises into their sex play and once worn, it places the penis right where one should hang; a strapon also can give a man an extra penis, one that might be firmer than their own, or you can get a hollow version which increases the size of the man’s manhood when he fits his penis into it. Other versions of strapons a man might wear will allow him for example to penetrate his female partner vaginally and use a special sized dildo strapon to penetrate her (simultaneously) anally.

Why Use a Strapon?

Black Strapon
There’s a common misconception that strapons are purely for lesbian couples who require some sort of penetrative stimulation but this is not fully the case. Strapons are used widely by lesbian couples to extend their sex play and add another dimension but that definitely isn’t their sole purpose. Strapon kits are also used as part of hetero’ sex and can serve to add intimacy, fun and extra stimulation. Some couples like to introduce a second penis into their play to try out simultaneous penetration of the anus and the vagina; others like the hollow strapon kits in order to experience a larger penis experience. And of course, there is pegging, which involves gender play but more on that later. Homosexual men are also known to use strapons for the varying penis size options that it gives.

Advantages of Strapon Sex & Play

  • They free the hands in comparison to pure dildo play. The hands can be used for other body stimulation so sensations are heightened.
  • They introduce a new level of play for couples where gender play can come in, so a woman can role play as a man even in a hetero’ relationship.
  • Double penetration for couples, both hetero’ and lesbian (simultaneously into the anus and vagina) is a whole new experience and so can add sheer excitement.
  • Strapon kits can help men who have erection issues which can bring new joy to an individual and to the couple.
  • Strapon kits are visually a turn on for many people and so immediately will spice up things in the bedroom.
  • Introducing a strapon kit into sex play requires communication as you’ll need to talk about setting the scene and getting the kit comfortable; having a relationship where talk about sex is normal and open will make a relationship more intimate as it forces you both to discuss what you want and like and what you’re both open to.
How do they work?

Most strapons come as kits consisting of a strapped harness and one or often more than one dildo. The dildo is quite often designed to look and feel like a real penis but many come in a variety of colours and materials. The harness will be designed to fit around the waist and upper thighs like a large belt with a few extra buckles to prevent them from moving out of place during sex. Most strapons will accommodate even larger waist sizes so just check out the finer measurement details on the individual strapon pages you want to purchase from. Some strapons come with a ring system to hold the dildo in place; you can also buy these rings separately. The rubber ring goes around the dildo shaft and then you can attach it to your harness. You can also source strapons that use a vacuum type of seal (eg Vac-u-lock) for a secure fit. Then there are strapless strapons which are inserted into a woman’s vagina and she ‘holds’ onto it using the Kegel muscles.

Strapon dildos generally have a wide flared base and a flat end. The lower parts should rest securely against the harness, while the flared base’s purpose is to keep the rubber ring from slipping off the dildo.

What are they made from?

Harness straps come in differing styles and can be made of leather, nylon, or elastic with obviously each one having a different feel. Nylon and elastic can be thrown into the washing machine but leather, by its nature requires more care; people tend to choose leather for the distinct look and feel that it gives.

The front sections of strapons are made from different materials to add to the texture sensations: leather, velvet, stiffened neoprene, and rubber.

Strapon Sex: What is Pegging?

Pegging is a gender “flipping” sex act where a female wears a strapon dildo and uses that to penetrate a man anally. It doesn’t mean that a man is gay if he enjoys this type of stimulation; many hetero’ men find anal penetration and stimulation of areas close to their prostate highly pleasurable.

Positions for Pegging

Getting Prepped:
Obviously for successful pegging, you need to have the right tools and equipment so ensure you have your strapon, a dildo that fits the strapon and lots of lube to hand. You will need a lot of lube for a pegging session so it’s important to stock up beforehand and to have it close by during your play. If you’re at the buying stage, you should get the person who will be on the receiving end of the dildo to actually choose it to help ensure they’re 100% comfortable with it in terms of size and material. In terms of comfortable positions, people will need to experiment a bit since successful sex positions are of course determined by size, flexibility, strength, and other factors so find what is comfortable and sensual for both of you but below are some to try out! You should recall the time you first tried out “regular” sex: the first time you tried it was likely not very memorable? So keep that in mind when you try your first pegging session because it might be something that will require practice but there’s fun in that too!

Position 1: Face to Face
Strapon Sex Positions - Face to Face

This is a popular pegging position because people enjoy seeing the look on their partner’s face as they get penetrated by a dildo especially if it’s a new experience as a hetero’ couple. This position also keeps everyone’s hands free so there can be plenty play kept for the real penis in the situation.

How to get in the position: Have the receiver raise his hips up using a pillow because it gives easier access. Placing a pillow or two under his head will not only make it more comfortable for him also but curving the spine in a gentle C-shape can make the prostate easier to reach and stimulation of the prostate can be immensely pleasurable for him when done right.

He should aim to raise his knees towards his chest and hold them in his hands or you as the partner can help to support them; this will help to relax the pelvic muscles thereby straightening out the curves of the rectum to give you a more direct angle. Play around with the knees closer together or further apart; experiment in order to see what works best.

Position 2: Limbered Up!

If you’ve been on the receiving end of anal, then this position in pegging will allow you to try it too!

How to get in the position: Have him position himself on his elbows and knees which moves the pressure off of his wrists and that will help him to last longer for your sex session. In this position, his hips will be higher than his shoulders and that’s a great position to be in for this type of strapon entry. Grab his hips to control the depth you penetrate or you can let him do the moving, or you can both work at it. Moving his knees closer together will raise him up at an angle or moving the knees further apart will adjust it also; keep trying until you get it how you both like it. In order to hit the prostate, aim the curve of the dildo downward and prepare to really pleasure him!

Position 3: Spooning
Strapon Sex Positions - Spooning

Who doesn’t love a bit of spooning? This is great especially if you have acquired a rather large dildo as part of your strapon experience.

How to get in the position: The guy lies on his side, keeping his knees up to his chest, this allows you to get in behind him and get close. Cover the dildo and him in lube and as you attempt entry, get him to push back with his rear as you grab onto his hips; obviously don’t try to force the whole dildo in on the first attempt but instead try to edge the tip in but communicate as you make your moves! That way you’ll know if you’re penetrating his thighs rather than the anal area as can happen often with the spooning position.

Position 4: High Level
Strapon Sex Positions - High Level

This is great for pegging because it really plays up the gender swap and dominance side of things so it adds a little bit of more fun!

How to get in the position: Get the guy to bend over a table or a couch so his rear is exposed for entry; roll up a towel or blanket to raise his legs to help with the angle that you want (or maybe he’d like to use a pair of heels instead). His hips will be easier to move around when you add some height under his feet. Depending on the height of the lady in the equation, there might need to be extra effort put in on this position in order to get it to work; what you want it to do is to stimulate him in the prostate area on entry so aim towards that.

Strapon Sex: Using a Strapless Strapon

Using a Strapless Strapon There’s no doubt about it, strapless strapons even sound confusing when you hear the words first! However, these sex toys provide an alternative to women who wish to enjoy a gender bending session or just want to try out penetration with a penis. They work by inserting the specific end meant for your vaginal area; that end of the device will be ergonomically designed in order to fit the curves of your body. Some strapless strapons come with the vaginal insert end with a vibrational element so it can therotically also be used for solo play. Primarily though, the strapless strapon is used as part of play with lesbian and hetero’ couples who don’t wish to use a ‘traditional’ strapon i.e. with actual straps. Lesbian couples can obviously use the strapless strapon to penetrate their partner anally or vaginally as they desire and hetero’ couples can use the strapless strapon for a wonderfully fun pegging session without any straps involved. It’s probably best to try a strapped version first to know what you like and dislike about strapon sex and move on from there to a strapless strapon because it might be just that bit more difficult for a beginner to grasp on how to use; issues like the strapless strapon falling out can definitely happen for the inexperienced but no need to get disheartened, practice makes perfect!

Strapless strapons definitely require getting used to and the pelvic floor muscles do need to be strengthened if rigorous “play” is to be assumed. If you wish for example to use a strapless strapon as a female with another female or in a pegging session, your pelvic floor muscles are up against the rigors of the anus and the sphincter is a strong muscle in men and women! Check out our helpful guide on improving the pelvic floor muscles here.

Tips for Excellent Strapon Sex & Play

  • Take your time to get used to the strapon as it’s a sex toy that will take more time to master than say for example a vibrator. Get comfortable with the straps, make sure you are happy where they lie so that you don’t have issues like chaffing to content with.
  • Be generous with lube when using your strapon; use lots of lube on the dildo and whatever opening is being penetrated and reapply where and when required.
  • When a woman is wearing the strapon, and entering a man, she as the “penetrator” should not move rather the recipient should do the moving in order to get into a comfortable position. Doggy style is best for this.
  • Women should “practice” male-style hip thrusting before wearing the strapon in order to perfect the motions.
  • Strapons allow for wonderful penetration without the need for use of hands. Be sure to make good use of your free hands and caress and stimulate your partner in other areas.
  • A hetero’ couple can try also some double entry if both are willing to do it; this means the man can penetrate his female partner with both his penis and the dildo connected to the strapon.
  • When women wear the harness, the holder typically covers the clitoris. Some women enjoy the clitoral stimulation that results when the base of the dildo presses the holder against it and if the dildo vibrates of course the clit’ will get benefit from that sensation.
  • A strapon doesn’t have to be used every time you chose to have a love making session with your partner but they give the option of having some extra dimensional fun in the bedroom whenever you feel the urge.
