Ball Gag
Bondage Guide

Gags and specifically ball gags are BDSM/bondage related toys that are placed in the mouth of a “sub” (the sub is the submissive and on the receiving end of the humiliation and pain from the dominant partner) during a bondage session. We’ve covered the whole area of bondage and BDSM in this comprehensive guide but below we explain specifically the area of ball gag bondage toys.

TYPES OF BALL GAG

Gags are widely used in bondage play but the ball gag is by far the most popular of all of the gag styles. Unsurprisingly, the gag itself is shaped like a ball and is designed to sit in the mouth behind the teeth. The ball is attached to a strap which can come in a variety of materials and levels of restraint and that strap then wraps around the head to secure it in place. Ball gags can be worn by all sexes. Their shape also stops the wearer from being able to swallow their saliva, making them drool uncontrollably.

Traditional Ball Gag

This is the type of ball gag that is most popular with those that introduce gags to their bedroom play; the most common sized spherical ball would be around 1.75 inches in diameter but of course other larger sizes are available. A traditional ball gag is usually made from a rubber or silicone material.

Holes in the Ball Gag/Open Mouth Ball Gag

Holes in the Ball Gag/Open Mouth Ball Gag

These are very similar to the traditional ball gags, they are circular gags and will go into the sub’s mouth and behind the teeth. They will restrict the wearer’s speech, but these have the added benefit of large or multiple small holes around the ball. These balls are fantastic as a starter option as the restriction of breathing isn’t a concern due to the existence of the holes.

Ball Gag with Headpiece

This is a more extensive ball gag that is a part of a larger mask-like contraption. Use of this will allow you to create a totally immersive experience. These types of ball gags vary in how they’re made up but it might include a harness that goes around the head and could also include an eye mask. They are easy to use and usually the ball gag part of the piece is slipped into the mouth first, then the rest of the piece is put on, and then strapped or buckled up, ready to go. Much more intense, these sorts of ball gags are best for advanced players who understand their limits.

Ball Gag with Dildo

These types of ball gags are sometimes known as a “forniphilic gag” which is a type of gag with the main purpose of objectifying and/or humiliating the wearer. The forniphilic gag holds a tool or device or sometimes a dildo or vibrator which the wearer controls with their mouth. When wearing the gag, the sub’s hands are usually bound behind them so they have no other option than to control the dildo with the ball gag that is in their mouth. The ball part of the gag acts as a mouthpiece or base for attaching the tool. The dildo can then be used to pleasure the dom’ if they so wish.

Interchangeable Ball Gag

This type of gag comes with a strap restraint that goes around the wearer’s head and a series of balls (the gags) which usually are in a number of sizes or materials. This allows the wearer to begin for example, by using a small ball and progressing up in size when they wish to simply by snapping out that ball and replacing it with a ball the next size up.

REASONS TO USE A BALL GAG IN BDSM PLAY

bdms play

  • Wearing a gag as part of bondage play is a classic BDSM aesthetic and just wearing the “gear” alone can be a massive turn on.
  • The helplessness of the sub turns on the dom’ even more as (s)he exerts complete control.
  • For the person wearing the ball gag, the inability to fully release energy orally creates excitement, builds tension which often results in a more intense orgasm elsewhere.
  • Seeing the sub’ drool and create muffled sounds from their mouth adds to the drama and theatrics of the session.
  • A ball gag is a great place to start for a kinky role play session such as acting out a fantasy kidnapping.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BALL GAG

ball gag

Beginner Level - Buying Guide

  • Small & breathable/vented (for example a ball gag with holes).
  • Choose either an extra small ball diameter = 1.0 to 1.25 inches / Small ball diameter = 1.5 inches approximately.
  • Go for easily adjustable restraint straps such as straps with D-rings which can be easily and quickly tightened.
  • Ball materials which are pleasant for beginners include silicone or rubber which are pliable and more comfortable as a first foray into ball gag bondage.

Intermediate Level - Buying Guide

  • Medium sized balls are suitable for an intermediate level player. Ball diameter of around 1.67 to 1.75 inches is what people usually consider ideal at this stage.
  • Materials of harder texture are likely to be preferred by the wearer to step things up.
  • Buckle fasteners (instead of a slip or D-ring fastener) on the strap that goes around the head are often a good choice to kick things up a notch as the jaws will open a little more as well as giving more “muffle” and drool.

Advanced Level - Buying Guide

  • Large and extra large sized balls are likely the preferred option of advanced players.
  • Large equates to around 2.0 inches and extra large equates to around 2.5 to 3.0 inches of ball diameter.
  • Players might like to choose from harder materials such as metal or leather.
  • In terms of the strap, players like to have a buckle or a even a lock to secure it in place.

To Summarise - What You Need to Consider Before Buying:

  • Men and women’s mouth sizes vary so take this into consideration before choosing the ball you want. If you’re not sure and it is a concern for you, measure the width of the open mouth of the potential wearer and when looking for a ball gag, just check the diameter of the ball before purchasing so you’ll have a good indication then.
  • Don’t be swayed by the first ball gag you see when you’re a beginner. Start with a small ball and work up in size.
  • Consider the shape of mouthpiece especially if you’re going for something like a ball gag with a dildo attached for example.
  • Consider the ball gag material - would the wearer have a preference for a soft or a harder material? For example, silicone as a material is tasteless, odourless and hypoallergenic so it’s an all round good choice of material but it really does depend on personal preference.
  • Breathable style ball gags ie those with holes are really good for beginners or for those who like to maintain a degree of control during play.

CLEANING YOUR BALL GAG TOYS

All sex toys should be cleaned after use in order to prevent infections and the same goes for your ball gag toys. When you think about it, you will be drooling lots of saliva and other bodily fluids so oral infections are a possibility.

To Clean
  • Use warm water and soap (antibacterial soap is optional).
  • Take extra care around holes, ridges, dips, or any difficult to clean areas.
  • Dry as much of the ball gag as possible; store in a silk/satin bag, clean box, or proper storage container.
  • Disinfect every couple of months depending on use (hot water, 10% bleach solution etc)

WARNING: Leather and rubber are porous materials and will never be 100% clean. This is ok as long as you don’t share your toys and keep them as clean as possible.

BALL GAG BONDAGE & SAFE WORDS

As with any type of BDSM or bondage play, it’s important to be conscious of safety throughout the session. Discuss with your partner at the outset about what levels of play you both are willing to go to and ALWAYS set out a safe word or signal to use that will alert the dom’ that you as the sub’ are unwilling to continue. For beginners, it’s a good idea to set short time limits to make sure things are going well and to ease the sub’ into the situation. There is no point in rushing into an elaborate scene especially as a novice wearer of the likes of a ball gag.

Due to the fact that speech will be restricted when wearing a ball gag, a safety signal is a better option.

BALL GAG BONDAGE – THE DO’S & DON’TS

DO DON’T
Do start with short time frames as a beginner to ball gag bondage. Don’t leave a gagged partner unattended.
Do have a non-verbal safety signal. Don’t use a ball gag on someone who has an upset stomach or a cold or sinus issues.
Do periodically check in on a gagged partner as the Dominant. Don’t force someone to use a ball gag if they haven’t 100% agreed to it.
Do check that the ball gag itself is in good condition & safe to use. Don’t leave a ball gag on a person for too long (20 minutes max for a beginner).
Do have a scissors to hand to cut the strap off just in case of an emergency.

When used safely, ball gags can be a huge amount of fun! They add a dimension of control and humiliation that appeals to many kinky people and they don’t necessarily have to be part of a full bondage experience.
